Date: 19th February 2026
World Encephalitis Day 2026 is being marked on 22 February with the launch of a new global awareness campaign designed to improve early recognition of encephalitis and encourage prompt treatment.
Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain. It is caused either by an infection invading the brain (infectious encephalitis) or through the immune system attacking the brain in error (post-infectious or autoimmune encephalitis).
Despite becoming more common in recent years, awareness remains limited, with 77% of people reportedly unfamiliar with the condition. Delays in diagnosis and treatment can lead to poorer outcomes.
We are joining in the effort to change this, joining Encephalitis International with their F.L.A.M.E.S. campaign.
F.L.A.M.E.S. stands for Flu-like symptoms, Loss of consciousness, Acute headache, Memory problems, Emotional or behavioural changes, and Seizures.
Quick diagnosis and treatment can lead to better outcomes, so increased awareness and remembrance of the acronym, much like the F.A.S.T. campaign around stroke, will make a difference in people’s lives.
As well as supporting this campaign we also spoke with Headway Kent member Claire, who is an Encephalitis survivor who had this to say.
"Encephalitis has affected me in many ways that I did not expect. My short-term memory is non-existent, but it has also given me a different kind of confidence I wasn't expecting. For me, learning to live with it has helped me in different ways. My family has pulled together to help me I am forever grateful for their support it has also, allowed me to do things I couldn't before. Thankyou Headway for all they do for everyone and thank you to my family for supporting me as we band together to fight the challenges encephalitis has given us."
